The National Multiple Sclerosis Society's website describes multiple sclerosis as "an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information in the brain, between the brain and the body."
The cause is unknown, depending on the site, although the disease is thought to be triggered by an environmental factor in a person with a genetic predisposition to respond. Most people are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50 and women are two to three times more likely to be diagnosed.
She thanked her famous girlfriends Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze and Jaime King for supporting her in the news.
"I'm in the thick of it, but I hope to give hope to others, and even to myself," she wrote.
