November 23 (UPI) – At least 34 people died after insurgents carried out several attacks in Pakistan.
During an attack, insurgents stormed the Chinese consulate in Karachi and exploded suicide bombings, killing themselves along with four other people. Two of the four victims were uniformed police officers, CNN reported. The other two were Pakistani visa applicants.
No Chinese nationals were killed during the attack.
"Our Chinese friends and officials – about 21 people – are all safe," Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi told reporters.
The Baloch Liberation Army, a separatist group based in Baluchistan province (southwest), has been at war with Pakistan since 2004, claiming responsibility for the attack.
The shelling was followed by an exchange of fire between the police and the insurgents, but no other deaths were reported.
Hours after the attack on the Chinese embassy, a bomb exploded in a crowded market in the Orakzai region of northwestern Pakistan. At least 30 people were killed and 40 others were injured.
According to Voice of America, Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan condemned the attacks and denounced them as "part of [a] conspiracy "against" economic and strategic cooperation "of Pakistan with China.
The Chinese Embassy also denounced the attacks and affirmed its economic relations with Pakistan.
"We thank the Pakistani army and police for their prompt and appropriate action against the attack, and express our sincere condolences to the two Pakistani police officers who were martyred during the attack." Any attempt to undermine the relationship Sino-Pakistani is doomed to failure, "said the Chinese Embassy said in a statement.
