LONDON (AP) – Serena Williams was ranked 25th in the Wimbledon women's tournament, the All England Club announced on Wednesday.
The 36-year-old American, who returned to competitive tennis after her daughter was born last September, is currently ranked 183rd. The All England Club generally follows the latest ranking list, but can make a change if deemed "necessary to produce a balanced draw."
The 23-time Grand Slam champion has won Wimbledon seven times.
The inclusion of Williams in the standings means that Dominika Cibulkova, 32nd in the standings, quarter-finalist at Wimbledon, will participate in the draw.
"I do not think it's the right thing to do," Cibulkova told the British BBC channel before the announcement. "I think it's just not fair."
Simona Halep, seeded, leads the women's standings, ahead of Caroline Wozniacki, second and final, Garbine Muguruza, third. Maria Sharapova is ranked 24th, a place ahead of Williams.
In the men's draw, the Wimbledon grass formula sees defending champion Roger Federer, looking for an eighth singles title, topping the standings.
The great Swiss is followed by Rafael Nadal, Marin Cilic, Alexander Zverev and Juan Martin del Potro.
