The hit series "Serial" airs the final season of the series of investigations – exploring the inner workings of the Cleveland justice system – later this month.

The first two episodes of season 3 "Serial" will debut on September 20th, and the next episodes will be released every week on Thursday. Instead of telling a single story during the series, as the first two seasons did, the third series will follow many different stories with a few episodes or even three.

At the launch of "Serial" in 2014, the benefits of NPR's "This American Life" became a day-to-day podcasting success. In the first season, Sarah Koenig recounted an investigation into Adnan Syed's 2000 conviction for the murder of his girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, in Baltimore. (The series has resulted in a new lawsuit against Syed, which remains pending.) Season 2 of "Serial" documented the story of Bowe Bergdahl, an American soldier captured by the Taliban. The first two seasons of "Serial" have been downloaded more than 340 million times.

Now, with Season 3, "Serial" tells the stories of ordinary cases that go through the court system in Cleveland. Producers said they chose Cleveland because they had unusual access to the recording in courtrooms, chambers of judges, hallways and lawyers' offices. For the past season, Koenig and Ohio-based journalist Emmanuel Dzotsi, former "This American Life" Fellow, have spent more than a year in the city examining small criminal cases such as marijuana possession and disorderly conduct. The duo says they have documented various manipulations, distortions and justifications that they believe produce a disparity between what people did and what they were punished for.

The show originates from Serial Productions, formed by the original producers of the podcast in 2017, and is associated with "This American Life", which is produced in collaboration with Chicago Public Media. The executive producer of "Serial" is Julie Snyder, who also created the company's "S-Town" podcast with Brian Reed, launched last year.

"In any case, Emmanuel and I followed, at one point, we thought," No, it can not be like that, "said Koenig in a prepared statement. "People who work in the system or who have gone through the system know it. But millions of other people do not do it. And over the past year, I've had this urgent feeling of wanting to open the door of the court and shake the people inside. Because things are happening – shocking things, fascinating things – in plain view.

Ira Glass, host of "This American Life", publisher of "Serial", commented that even the first versions of season 3 have earned him "that fool, the OMG fanboy, he is 'Serial'! felt "that reflects" Koenig's seriously serious and serious investigation of the underlying truths that underlie all the stories ".

Season 3 "Serial" will be available as a free download through apps including Apple podcasts and Google podcasts, and will also be available for free on Pandora via an exclusive streaming partnership. After subscribing, listeners will automatically receive all episodes as soon as they are released. The new season is exclusively sponsored by the ZipRecruiter job site.

The third season of "Serial" should be about 10 episodes, but that could change. Listen to the Season 3 trailer on serialpodcast.org.
