Sesame Street Writer says Bert and Ernie Are Gay

As fans have suspected for years, it turns out that the world's most beloved puppet roommates are more than just friends, according to a new interview with Sesame Street writer Mark Saltzman through the LGBTQ lifestyle website Queerty.

He compared his own relationship with the famous publisher Arnold Glassman to the characters. "I've always felt that without a huge program, when I was writing Bert and Ernie, they were." I had no other way to contextualize them. The other thing was that more than one person had mentioned Arnie and me as "Bert and Ernie," Saltzman recalled.

Of course, Bert and Ernie are icons of pop culture. They even covered New Yorker in July 2013, quoted by Saltzman in his interview. More recently, the duo has redone the theme song of The prince of Bel-Air, which skyrocketed Will Smith to fame. In the Muppet version, they recall how they met.

"I said hello when I approached," sings Bert in the video, airing on Sesame StreetYoutube channel. "He said …"

"Oh what is it? I have a banana in the ear, "Ernie adds.

"Want to be friends who laugh to learn and share?" Bert answers. "Ernie showed the chair and said …" as Ernie continues, "Sit there."

"Half a whole, half a pair," sings Bert.

"This is how we became Ernie and Bert. Which pair, Ernie concludes.
