ELLSWORTH – The Alliance for Health Equity (HEAL) presents an event on World AIDS Day, December 1st at 6pm. Episcopal Church of St. Dunstan.

This event will include a spaghetti dinner, speakers and an opportunity to commemorate and honor those who have lost their lives because of an AIDS-related illness. This year's theme is "Know Your Status".

This year is the 30th year of the annual event. "What began in 1988 as the first ever World Health Day continues today to bring people together in the fight against HIV, to support people living with HIV and to remember those who have died." said a statement from Health Equity Alliance.

In Maine in 2015 (latest figures available from the Maine Centers for Disease Control), 48 new cases of HIV were diagnosed and 26 cases of AIDS.

HEAL, formerly Down East AIDS Network, was founded in 1987 to address the AIDS epidemic. Some of the agency's original clients are still active in the organization.

"Our medical case managers support people living with HIV by helping them maintain their health, their jobs and their living conditions," says Willow Yerxa, director of case management and mental health services at HEAL. "Our clients rely on the support they receive from our case managers and others."
