Desperate spectators headed out of the Sevilla nightclub in Riverside, California when gunfire was heard, witnesses said.

Fighting broke out in the streets as people fought for life, witnesses told KTLA.

"I turned around and people were shooting," he told the station.

"I ran behind the bar and suddenly, a bunch of people found themselves stuck near the exit.

He added, "I was only praying, for example, God helps me through that."

And a woman who was promoting the event at the club turned to Twitter moments after the shoot.

"A few minutes ago Seville shot Seville," she wrote.

"My friends were promoting the event tonight. It's so exhausting. I pray that everything is fine.

And another man who was at the club wrote on Twitter that he had "panicked" when he heard gunshots.

"I was at the disco in Seville and they were filming the place," he wrote.

"I've cracked lowkey. I am happy that my friends and I are doing well and I like all my friends for having calmed down during our stay when shots were fired.

Riverside police said they received a call at 12:04 am Monday, reporting a shootout inside and outside the club.

Officers arrived at the site, which also houses a tapas restaurant, on Mission Inn Avenue, where they found two people shot and wounded.

They were both taken to a local hospital for treatment.

In a statement, police announced that five more people had arrived at hospitals in the area to seek treatment for gunshot wounds received during the shootings at the club.

Further details on their conditions are not known.

Riverside police said they opened an investigation for attempted murder.

Detectives from the Robbery Brigade – Homicide Unit, Gang Intelligence Unit, and the Crime Section Technicians opened an investigation.

A police spokesman said the investigation was ongoing and that no other details were available.
