A road accident involving a limousine carrying a wedding party and another vehicle at a notorious intersection killed several people and sent others to the hospital on Saturday afternoon in Schoharie County.

County dispatchers reported receiving the first of many calls to 911 at 13:55. after the wreck near the Apple Barrel Country Store in the city of Schoharie.

Emergency calls triggered a massive intervention at the intersection of Highway 30 and Highway 30A, which included six ambulances, three firefighting companies and two helicopters. Some of the wounded were transported by helicopter to the hospital of Albany Medical Center.

On Saturday afternoon, state police were rebuilding the wreckage and some of these two busy roads were closed to traffic. The authorities were also trying to get in touch with the family members of the victims.

The supervisor of the city of Schoharie, Alan Tavenner, said Saturday that improvements made by the state's Transportation Department at the dangerous intersection about seven years ago did not seem to make it any safer.

"There were semi-trailers that came tumbling down that hill, and it was a miracle not to kill anyone," Tavenner said.
