HOUSTON – The first Travis Scott Astroworld festival, which is a music festival with 13 different artists, will take place on Saturday and the doors will open at noon.
The local rapper is from Missouri City and recently released an album called "Astroworld", which pays tribute to the much loved amusement park that once stood along the 610 loop.
Thousands of people are expected at the music festival and several students from a special program from the 3rd room will also be present thanks to Scott.
"It just shows that he appreciates the arts a lot and wants to share this appreciation with students from the Houston area," said Jamie Herrero, executive director of Workshop Houston, a creative youth development organization that works with children after school.
Mentors use the arts to engage students in fun and productive educational activities.
They have four different "stores" that touch different arts trades. For example, they have a Beat Shop, dedicated to teaching students music, creating beats and recording music.
There is the Dance Shop, where students can learn different dance styles.
The Style Shop focuses on fashion and learns to make clothes.
The Discovery Shop is for students who want to focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) enrichment.
Herrero said the program was extremely important because, of the 275 children enrolled in the 3rd Ward program, many would not have the opportunity to participate in these types of programs without the Houston workshop.
He was shocked when Scott's team asked his program not only to attend the music festival, but also to receive some of the proceeds.
"That's one of the things we know we're doing good work here in the 3rd room, but we're a very, very well known organization so far, so it was exciting to hear someone like Travis, "Herrero said.
"It's quite overwhelming because I did not think I could go and, oh, opportunity, I can not wait to get out," said Gabriel Allen, a sophomore in high school.
After school, he goes to Workshop Houston, where he spends his time at the Beat Shop, where he has already created his own music.
"Now, I know how difficult it is and what the challenges are to beat the pace, and I can pick the hats and things like that. It helped me a lot, "said Allen about the program.
He added that he enjoyed more artists like Scott.
"I feel good, I guess it's a unique chance in life, because this will be my second concert," said Caleb Harris, a Scott fan and enthusiastic to attend this festival.
Workshop Houston has just completed its fundraising campaign, which helped him build a new building in which he moved about six months ago.
The organization said it was still looking for donations to help get more equipment and resources for students.
