Shawn Porter supported his comments tonight on Showtime and is once again world champion. Porter started the fight by moving a lot in the ring, giving Garcia his favorite rhythm, which made things difficult at first. That said, in the third or fourth round, Porter seemed to realize that he had to go back to what he was doing best and that made the difference in the fight.
Porter has accelerated the pace significantly mid-way and has just begun to overtake Garcia. It became a fight of Porter's activity against Garcia's well-placed shots. At the end of the bout, Porter shot nearly 300 more than Garcia and the judges earned the official scores of 116-112, 115-113 and 115-113 for Porter. I also scored 115-113 in favor of Porter for BLH.
In the post-fight interview, the welterweight title holder, Errol Spence, crashed into the ring, saying that he was doing the same thing to Porter that Porter had made to Garcia during his last fight. Spence has called for a unification of welterweight titles with Porter and Porter said to be telling the crowd that this will be the easiest fight to do in boxing.
Garcia (34-2, 20 KO's) later said he thought he had done enough to win, but admitted it was a close fight. He says he will resume work and return to a world title. But tonight, the WBC title belongs to Shawn Porter.
