A US border police officer, suspected of killing four prostitutes, was arrested early Saturday after a fifth woman managed to escape and inform the authorities, describing the officer as " serial killer".

Juan David Ortiz, an Intel supervisor for the Border Patrol, fled the state troops and found himself hiding in a hotel car park in Laredo around 2am Saturday, said Martin Cuellar, Webb County Sheriff. (235 kilometers) southwest of San Antonio. He said the investigators had "very strong evidence" that he was responsible for the deaths of the four women.

District Attorney Isidro Alaniz described Ortiz as a serial killer. The authorities did not disclose the names or nationalities of the victims and refused to discuss the evidence or say how the women had been killed.

Alaniz said the investigators were still trying to determine a motive for the murders. He said that all women worked as prostitutes.

He said his office was planning to charge Ortiz with four counts of murder and one aggravated kidnapping leader.
