In the eyes of Americans, California has been a place of departure and reinvention. So, it makes sense that Hope Hicks is heading west to take up the post of communications director of "New Fox", the parent company of Fox News, based in Los Angeles. Hicks, a 29-year-old former P.R. flack, experienced a hard time in New York after leaving Donald Trump's White House at the end of March. Paparazzi were chasing her. She was photographing her jogging in Central Park with Rob Porter, his romance at the West Wing office, which left the White House after allegations of spousal abuse were made (Porter denied). And she also had to spend time and six figures on legal fees (apparently funded by the Republican National Committee), Robert Mueller's investigation. The opportunity to work for the Murdoch on another coast would be a chance for a reset.

Until Trump's presidency, working at the White House was a guarantee of quality jobs in the private sector. West Wing officials, their hand-crafted CVs, have easily migrated to investment banks, media companies and universities. Like many Trump alumni, Hicks has had a tougher time. "It's Trump's stain," said a former West Wing official. She took a lot of meetings, but the big offers were not received. "She said she was looking for a lot of work in the media and investment banks," recalls a leader who met her. At one point, it seemed to her that she might even return to the White House and replace the chief of staff in difficulty, John Kelly. (Hicks declined to comment.)

But the Trump-Kushner bond was finally adopted. In August, Page Six announced that Mr. Hicks had lunch at Avra, in the Upper East Side, with the media banker. Aryeh Bourkoff, the LionTree C.E.O. and a close friend of Jared Kushner's (During the 2016 presidential campaign, Kushner would have had conversations with Bourkoff about the launch of Trump TV). At this time, Hicks begins discussions with Lachlan Murdoch, who became president and C.E.O. New Fox, the lean media company made up of assets that the Murdoch did not sell to Disney. According to some sources, Trump and Kushner have called for Rupert Murdoch recommend Hicks.

Two weeks ago, Hicks had received offers from Bourkoff and Fox, sources said. In the end, working for Fox across the country was the most appealing opportunity. We do not know what it means for his relationship with Porter, who until now has been unable to find work, said a former colleague from the West Wing. "It's a big job. In addition, she will move to L.A., "said a friend. Although, of course, since she works for Fox, who often works for Trump, this is not a new start at all.
