Representatives of the Pierce County Sheriff respond to a shootout Thursday after a hostage-taking in Parkland, said a spokesman for the department.

The incident occurred at a used car dealer in the 13400 block of Pacific South Avenue at approximately 7:30 pm, Sheriff spokesman Ed Troyer said.

An armed suspect trapped in the company continued shooting at law enforcement officials, Troyer said at around 9 pm It is thought that he is barricading himself inside the company.

The sheriff's SWAT team is on the scene, said Troyer. All law enforcement officers are not injured.

A burglary "went off the rails," said Troyer, and the deputies arrived quickly and three of the employees left the compound. A fourth was stuck inside, where the "well armed" suspect was holding them under the threat of a weapon.

MPs were able to safely rescue the hostage, said Troyer.

Pacific Avenue is closed from 128th Street East to 138th Street East at this time.
