CHICAGO (AP) – A man has been introduced to Mercy Hospital and opened fire on a woman alleged to be his former fiancée before robing the other person, leaving two people, including the shooter killed, and two others, including a policeman, injured Monday afternoon. .

A SWAT team responded to the 292-bed hospital located near Interstate-55 in Bronzeville, the historically black neighborhood just south of the South Loop neighborhood. Nearby buildings, including the National Teachers Academy, were locked during the attack. Mercy Hospital said in a tweet later that the incident was over and that all the patients were safe.

Lenice Donaldson, pharmacy technician at Mercy, said she was at the back for a drink and that she had just returned after hearing the shots. She and the other technicians shut themselves up until the police pulled them out, she said.

"It's just amazing. We took out our hands in the air and there was blood everywhere in the hall, "Donaldson said. "It's a pity."

Tracy Lyons, a cancer survivor, said she was traveling to Mercy for regular radiation treatments. She described how she had listened to the shooting between the police and the shooter until a SWAT team released her, along with some technicians, to a lab.

"It was only pow-pow-pow," she said. "We thought we would never get out of there."

According to the Associated Press, a witness named James Gray told ABC7 that he saw several people shot dead: "It looked like he was turning to shoot people randomly. In an interview with CBS Chicago, a witness who was at the hospital said He saw blood at the entrance to the hospital and heard shots fired repeatedly. Another witness said he saw an armed gunman fire on someone several times in a parking lot. He added that the police responded quickly and exchanged fire with the shooter.

Sen. Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.) Has written in a tweet from Monday night that he was praying for the victims of the shooting and their families.
