A man was killed and four others wounded in a shooting Sunday morning in Auburn.

According to a statement from the Auburn police, the Auburn police responded to a Sunday call at 2:24 in the morning. According to the Opelika-Auburn newspaper, the police had cordoned off an area in front of the McDonald's restaurant, located just down the block from the Toomer's Corner.

The police were already near the call, dispersing a large crowd and confirmed gunfire were reported and several victims were found, the statement said.

A 20-year-old man from Tuskegee was found dead, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds, the statement said. "In addition, four others were wounded by gunfire and three victims were transported by ambulance to the East Alabama Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries," the statement said.

The injured are a 17-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman, both of Opelika, a 21-year-old student from Auburn University in Hilton Head, South Carolina. A 16-year-old Opelika man was also airlifted to Piedmont's Columbus Regional Medical Center, police said.

"Beforehand, information was obtained that an altercation took place just before an exchange of gunfire would have caused injuries," according to the police statement.

According to the statement, the incident is not considered a random shooting.

The shooting took place at the corner of Toomer's Corner, a frequent gathering place for fans of Auburn University after football games. Auburn defeated Alabama State University 63-9 on Saturday night.

The shooting remains under investigation and no other details have been released yet, the police said.
