Mammography recommendations can be confusing and more women are now being asked if they would prefer 3D screening as opposed to the traditional option.
A 3D mammogram, also known as Digital Breast Tomosynthesis, is a new breast cancer screening option that takes more images than a 2D digital mammogram and experts say it does. is more precise.
Should women opt for this new test? Yes, Tara Henrichsen, a radiologist at the Mayo Clinic, told USA TODAY.
"I do not think there's any reason not to do it," Henrichsen said. "It's an up-to-date mammogram."
3D mammography is different from imaging itself. Older digital devices take a few unique images of the breast, while 3D technology supports them, as well as other images, at different depths of the breast.
"This allows us to see layers through the breast tissue," increasing doctors' chances of finding hidden cancer cells and lesions, Henrichsen said.
According to Henrichsen, better imaging could also reduce the number of follow-up visits that a patient might need, depending on the results.
The appointment time is usually the same with 3D imaging. The only experiential difference that patients might notice is that the machine itself is moving around the breast to collect additional data.
A disadvantage of 3D mammography could be the price, depending on the patient's insurance. Technology is more costly for buying clinics, which can result in a higher price for patients.

The American Cancer Society advises all women to begin annual mammography screening at the age of 45 and to be screened every two years at age 55. The American College of Radiology and the Society of Breast Imaging recommend that women begin mammography screening at the age of 40 years.
