JERUSALEM – In a moving scene, the Israeli national anthem was performed at a public sporting event in the United Arab Emirates while two Israeli ministers announced that they would soon visit the region with new signs of warming relations between Israel and the Gulf. States.
The events occurred a few days after the official visit of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the state of Oman, Gulf country, the first meeting of this type for over 20 years.
Netanyahu is often touted for having warmed his behind-the-scenes relationship with Arab states, attracted by Israel, partly out of mutual animosity towards Iran. But until recently, he has rarely provided examples.
This changed with the dramatic announcement on Friday of his trip to Oman, where he met with Sultan Qaboos bin Said.
"These were important discussions, both for the State of Israel and for very important discussions for the security of Israel, there will be others," he said. Netanyahu told his cabinet on Sunday.
As he spoke, Israeli judoka Sagi Muki was winning a gold medal at an international judo competition in Abu Dhabi. Muki stood on the winner's pedestal while Israel's national anthem, "Hatikva", was being played, while Israeli Minister of Culture and Sports, Miri Regev, was proudly watching.
"We did the story," then tweeted Regev.
This was a significant change from last year, when the organizers of the United Arab Emirates had excluded Israel from displaying its flag or playing its national anthem during the tournament, when one of its athletes had received a medal .
The International Judo Federation had temporarily suspended the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam from its schedule, but it was reinstated in September after tournament organizers promised equal treatment to Israeli athletes.
Israel and the Arab Gulf countries shared concerns about Iran's activities in the region, including its nuclear program and its involvement in the civil wars in Syria and Yemen.
Oman's unique regional position could allow it to play a greater role in mediating between Israel and Iran as a nemesis. The tiny Gulf State, sandwiched between Iran and Saudi Arabia, has good relations with rival countries.
On Sunday, the office of Israel's Minister of Transport, Israel Katz, announced that he will be traveling to Oman next week for a conference on international transport. Katz, who is also Israel's intelligence minister, will present a plan to establish a rail link between the Arab Gulf states and Israel.
The Office of the Minister of Communications, Ayoob Kara, also announced that he would travel to Dubai for a conference on communications.
