Sigur Rós longtime drummer, Orri Páll Dýrason, has resigned from the group as a result of an allegation of sexual assault. Band members Jónsi Birgisson and Georg Hólm announced the resignation in a brief note posted on Facebook this morning.
The allegation against Dýrason appeared last week when artist Meagan Boyd published a description of the alleged assault against Instagram. She writes that she met Dýrason in January 2013 at a Los Angeles club:
"I also kissed him before I fell asleep in the same bed, after having completely knocked him out. I woke up with the feeling of being penetrated without my consent during a deep sleep. It happened twice that night, and I wondered why I was not leaving the first time. But I was drunk, died tired, in shock, and it was just before I ever heard of anything like Uber / Lyft … but none of that should count because no one deserves to be raped / touched / licked / fucked without CONSENT. "
Boyd added that Christine Blasey Ford's testimony about her alleged assault by Brett Kavanaugh, a Supreme Court candidate, prompted her to speak now. Over the past six years, she wrote, "I thought no one would believe me, I felt irresponsible to trust [Dýrason] just because he was in a band that I loved and respected him as an artist. "
Boyd then posted what she said was an electronic correspondence between her and Dyrason, as reported by Pitchfork. In this correspondence, Dýrason apparently denied the accusation by writing: "I do not understand why you would like to publicly accuse me of something I did not do" and that "my experience of this night is completely different from yours. Boyd replied, in part, "You light me up with gas."
The so-called email correspondence has since been deleted. In a follow-up, Boyd said that the post had been reported for violating the standards of the Instagram community and that it was not his decision to remove it.
Spin has contacted a representative of Sigur Rós for an additional comment.
Update (12h, Eastern Time): In a bilingual statement posted on his Facebook page, Dýrason commented on his decision to leave Sigur Rós without addressing the substance of Boyd's allegations. Resigning "is a difficult decision for me, but I can not let these serious allegations influence the group and the important and magnificent work they have done in recent years," he wrote.
