Singer Alan Jackson's son-in-law dies after falling on a boat

Alan Jackson, the star of the campaign, mourns the loss of his son Ben Selecman.

While helping a woman on a dock in Jupiter, Florida on Wednesday, Selecman slipped and hit her head – suffering from head trauma – and died soon after, according to the Associated Press. He was 28 years old.

Selecman, who was Deputy Attorney for Davidson County, Tennessee, was married to Jackson's daughter, Mattie.

The couple was recently married in October of last year at a ceremony in Franklin, Tennessee.

"Ben will tell you that we met for the first time at a joint friends wedding, but I just remember dancing with a cute guy and never thinking about him again," said Mattie at Southern Bride.

"We reconnected two years later while spending a summer working for a judge in Nashville while studying law. He asked me out and I said no, but he did not give up.

"He pursued me until I finally saw the handsome, outgoing, pious guy I needed." After deciding that we were made forever, he took me on a picnic on the Old Historic Natchez Trace, where we enjoyed the most incredible wines, cheese, dances and proposal, " said Mattie.

The Nashville Davidson County Attorney General's Office honored Selecman on his Facebook page: "Samuel Benton, Assistant District Attorney, Ben 'Selecman 1990-2018".

"Thank you for your service, your kindness, your compassion and for the laughs and the memories."

In a statement issued by Taste of Country, the District Attorney's Office said: "The district attorney's office is saddened to announce the death of DA assistant Ben Selecman … Attorney Glen Funk said that the office of the district attorney Attorney to serve the people of Davidson Country. Our prayers are with Ben's family. He will be missed.

Alan Jackson's representative did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.
