The victim of a terrorist attack on the CBD in Melbourne on Friday was identified as the owner of a local café, Sisto Malaspina.

Mr. Malaspina, owner of the Pellegrini espresso bar, was stabbed in Bourke Street on Friday afternoon by a lone terrorist.

He is believed to have been stabbed after running to help his attacker after his car's blast, the Herald Sun reported.

Pellegrini's opened in 1974 and was the first coffee shop in Melbourne to have an espresso machine.

Malaspina's business partner, Nino Pangrazio, told the Herald Sun that his colleague's death was a "sad day for Melbourne" and described him as "the happiest person you can imagine".

"It's never a bad word, never a moment of boredom," he said.

He also became a grandfather for the first time last week.

Tributes were also given on social media for Malaspina.

One man wrote that he was "stunned" by his death and described Mr. Malaspina.

"I said hello to Sisto last weekend, when I had coffee with a friend at Pellegrini," he tweeted.

"Such a gentleman. Always discuss with customers. "

Another woman added that she was "absolutely devastated".

"He has been and always will be one of the friendliest men I've ever met," she tweeted.

"It was not so long ago, my birthday was planned and he celebrated it with me with his kind hospitality."

Terrorist "planned explosion" for Melbourne
