According to the researchers, people with chronic dry eye disease probably have a low reading rate. Chronic dry eye is a common condition in which natural tears fail to adequately lubricate the eyes, thus greatly affecting its functioning.

The study found that the disease could slow a person's reading speed by up to 10% and make reading difficult for an average of 30 minutes. People with clinically significant dry eye could read fewer words per minute – 32 fewer words per minute – than people without the disease who read at the same rate of 272 words per minute.

"We suspected that people with dry eyes were generally unable to maintain good reading performance because their tears could not lubricate their eye surfaces fast enough," said Esen Akpek, of the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute in the United States. .

For the study, published in the journal Optometry and Vision Science, the team included 186 adults aged 50 and over. Participants did not use prescription or over-the-counter eye drops within 24 hours of the test. It is important to note that all participants responded to the quality of vision and eye discomfort, as well as environmental factors that led to eye disorders such as wind or smoke.

People who often suffer from dry eye symptoms, such as tingling, fluctuating vision and dryness, may try over-the-counter, but will do better if they undergo professional testing and diagnosis, Akpek said.
