On Wednesday, October 3rd, the Bucket Approach will take place from 8:30 to 12:30. at the Scenic Bluffs Community Health Center in Cashton, sponsored by the 7C Tobacco Prevention Coalition.

The half-day training will teach participants to implement the Bucket approach to smoking cessation in their practices. The "bucket" approach is a set of smoking cessation interventions suitable for smokers also suffering from mental illness. It is also a population-based care strategy for behavioral health treatment programs.

"While overall smoking rates have dropped, we still see higher rates of smoking among some groups of people," said Kayleigh Day, community health educator at the Monroe County Health Department. "In Wisconsin, 17% of adults smoke, but when we take a closer look, 31% of smokers are diagnosed with mental illness or addiction. it is clear that more support is needed for this population. "

According to the Wisconsin Smoking Prevention and Control Program, nearly eight out of ten people in treatment for addiction issues also smoke. These people are more likely to die of smoking than their other addictions. However, research shows that when individuals leave tobacco and other substances at the same time, they are 25% more likely to abstain from both.
