PENSACOLA, Fla. – This was A day to remember Tuesday in Pensacola Beach, but not necessarily because it was fun.

Beach lovers near Fort Pickens, Pensacola Beach, were shocked to see a snake emerge on the shore at around 4pm.

East Hill resident Rhonda Saunders said she had no idea how things were going, but she was stunned to see her. She thinks that the snake's trip has tired enough.

"I was with my daughters and we saw a small crowd of people taking pictures of something that had stranded on the beach. We went and we could not believe it," Saunders said. . "(The snake) was exhausted trying to keep his head out of the water, too tired to go on the sand."

Saunders said some people had begun to seek professional assistance, and that was a good thing too, as it would only get so close.

"We felt sorry, struggling like that," Saunders said. "But I was definitely not going to get there."

Saunders estimated that the snake was about 3 feet in length. She said that the crowd gathered around her proclaimed it was a diamond rattlesnake.

Biologists from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission were unable to definitively identify the snake on the basis of Saunders' photo, which the newspaper sent them in an email on Wednesday afternoon.
