"SNL" star Kenan Thompson talks about Pete Davidson's vet joke

Kenan Thompson both criticized and defended his "SNL" co-star Pete Davidson after he mocked a Republican veteran running for Congress.

"It's never somewhere I would go in the offense towards veterans because my father is one," said Dan Crenshaw, adding that the comic "missed the mark."

"It's been an unfortunate outcome when you're a comedian trying to go for jokes … and you want to bring joy into something and you miss the mark," the 40-year-old added.

During the show's "Weekend Update" segment, Davidson said Crenshaw, who lost his eye during an IED blast in Afghanistan, looked like "a hitman in a porn movie."

The 24-year-old comedian has come back for the comments. Still, Thompson defended his colleague the best he could.

"Pete's a good kid, he has a good heart, he has tragedy in his life with his father passing in 9/11, so I definitely do not think he goes out to offend people," the longtime comedian said. "I'm pretty sure [the ‘SNL’ staff is] going to right that wrong, because it's not our intention to disrespect anyone. "

Thompson also addressed Davidson's joke on the "Today Show" this week.

While Davidson has yet to address the controversy, Crenshaw won his election in Texas and joked in his victory that he now has more Twitter followers than the young comedian.
