Snow party in the shuttles: Multiple accidents on the GWB, overcrowding at the port authority

NEW YORK (WABC) –

As the snow moved into the Tri-State on Wednesday night, the winter weather created a chaotic evening in the surrounding area.

The Bayonne Bridge was closed in both directions and multiple accidents were reported on the George Washington Bridge at 16 hours. The eastbound lanes were closed for several hours while crews were working to clear the crashes. All lanes reopened shortly after 18:30, but travelers were asked to wait for delays.

During the trip, drivers were strongly encouraged to avoid the GWB and to use the Holland and Lincoln tunnels, which also reported delays of 60 to 90 minutes.

Due to overcrowding at the port authority bus terminal, the second and third levels were closed. They will reopen when conditions improve, but until then, the building was closed to anyone who was not already inside.

Long Island drivers also had slippery roads. The South Brunswick police said they attended more than a dozen accidents in half an hour.

Due to weather-related switching issues, the LIRR service was temporarily suspended westbound between Woodside and Penn Station. It was also suspended between Atlantic Terminal and Jamaica in both directions.

Transit train service in New Jersey was subject to 90-minute delays, while the NJT bus service experienced delays of 75 minutes. Tickets / passes for buses, trains and light rail are honored throughout the system.

The MTA said its buses were equipped with all-weather tires and were not chained, according to forecasts. For Wednesday night, the MTA will not put its bus accordion on the road.

Local airports are also experiencing significant delays. JFK reported delays of 3 hours, Newark reported delays of nearly 5 hours, while LaGuardia reported delays of more than an hour.
