So what's going to happen with Negan after his big mid-season finale?

(Spoilers coming for the mid-season finale of season 9 of "The Walking Dead" on AMC)

Until now, throughout Season 9 of "The Walking Dead", Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) has been stuck at one place: his prison cell in Alexandria. We spent time with him from time to time because he makes fun of those who visit him. This week, it is Gabriel (Seth Gilliam) who experiences the heckling of Negan.

And it is Gabriel who apparently made a big mistake that will change the course of Negan's future. Late in the episode, after pissing off Gabriel with his usual speech – Gabriel was not in the mood to treat him because he was worried for Rosita but could not help her. see because he was on Negan's assignment – Gabriel closed the cell and broke loose. That night, Negan discovers that the door of the cell is not locked.

Then Negan comes out of there … and that's where his story ends, as we head for the mid-season break.

Now, Negan had a key role to play in comics with the coming war against the Whisperers, these people we discovered were disguised as zombies at the end of the mid-season finale. The TV version of "The Walking Dead" already leads him in at least a slightly different direction, although it is probably in the interest of condensing his story a bit.

Anyway, I'm about to talk about what Negan did after leaving Alexandria in comics, which means Potential spoilers to come for the last half of season 9 of "The Walking Dead". Just FYI.

In the comics, Negan discovers that his cell is unlocked but that he does not leave. He wants to stay to try to win Rick's confidence and show he is reforming. It does not work. So when a teenager named Brandon Rose decides to break up Negan to take revenge on Rick, who killed his father, and Whisperers, who killed his mother, Negan agrees.

Brandon wants to force Whisperers and Alexandrians to kill each other by disclosing Rick's plans to the Whisperers. But Negan has other ideas and murders Brandon before going to the Whisperer camp and pretending that he wants to join them. After a long discussion with Whisperer leader Alpha, about his Whisperer life, Negan kills her and slips out of the camp with her head.

He brings his head back to Alexandria and Rick allows him some freedom in exchange for continuing the war against the Whisperers, which he does. During the war, Negan accidentally breaks his bat, Lucille, during the fighting. At one point, he even saves Rick's life. Once all this is over, Negan gets his freedom for real and leaves to live alone in the woods.

While there he is there, he is finally confronted with Maggie in a sequence that already played in the series several weeks ago – when Maggie (Lauren Cohan) went to Alexandria to put Negan for good, but could not bring himself to do it because he was so pathetic.

Now, the part of this story that will certainly not appear in the TV version of "The Walking Dead" concerns all the content of Brandon Rose, because this character does not exist in the series. As you may have guessed, Brandon is the son of Tammy Rose. But everything about Tammy Rose (Brett Butler) in the series is different: she is married to Mr. Sutton and their son Kenneth died in the premiere of season 9.

This is so and with Rick (Andrew Lincoln) out of the picture, star Angela Kang and the writers of the series have decided, apparently, to give a bond to Negan only when he discovered that his cell was open and to skip all those other things. Of course, the next step is still unknown, as the series has shown a growing willingness to abandon the book over the past two years.

But it will be a few months before knowing for sure where Negan's story goes, now that "The Walking Dead" is paused.
