Some flea and tick treatments increase risk of convulsions in pets, warns FDA

Health officials alert pet owners and veterinarians that certain flea and tick treatments could expose dogs and cats to an increased risk of neurological problems, including: crises. The US Food and Drug Administration states that the drugs belong to the class of isoxazolines and include Bravecto, Credelio, Nexgard and Simparica.

These products are approved for the treatment and prevention of flea and tick infestations. Although these treatments are generally considered safe and effective for cats and dogs, the FDA recommends pet owners consult with their veterinarian to review the medical history of their pets and determine if a product of the class of isoxazoline is appropriate for their pet.

Affected products have been associated with neurological side effects, including muscle tremors, ataxia (loss of complete body movement control) and seizures in some patients. dogs and cats, reports the FDA.

Although most dogs and cats do not suffer from neurological problems related to treatment, seizures can occur even without a history.

The FDA says it is working with manufacturers of isoxazoline-based products to include new information on labels to highlight the risk of neurological events.
