NBC News found that nearly a dozen organizations had paid to use the restricted photos of the Trump family in 2017 and thus made indirect payments to the Trump family.

When they were contacted for the NBC News survey, many of these outlets removed the photos from their sites and stated that they were not aware of need for use of photos. While Getty Images said that any information on royalties paid to the first lady is confidential, press photographers and media experts say that such an agreement with a political figure is unusual.

The First Lady's office did not immediately return a request for comment.
