South Carolina football coach Will Muschamp came out after his team's 56-35 defeat against Clemson, a bit brisk, and got the first media question before apologizing. He clarified that the goal was to win, even against a favorite of 26 points, on the road.
"Our guys fought their guts," Muschamp said. "We came here to win the match. We do not have it. "
So what did he say to his team after playing the best against his No. 1 rival during his tenure?
"He knew what kind of band he had," linebacker T.J. Dit Brunson. "The guys did not go to bed and did not stop. The guys were always hungry, no matter the score or anything. He was very proud of us for our fight. It was the biggest thing. We still have some way to go, but it's coming.
The Gamecocks remained at a Tigers rating for much of the first half. After falling behind by 28, they continued afterwards, adding a pair of scoring at the end of the match, throwing again and again.
It was by far the most competitive meeting between the teams occupying the Muschamp position. The Gamecocks were down 35 before even being on the dashboard two years ago. Last season, USC lost 34-0 at the start of the fourth quarter.
The season in South Carolina has been strange. The offensive was underperformed early and started late. The defense has had its share of problems and has now been destroyed by injuries. The sudden rise in Kentucky and tight losses against Florida and Texas A & M ruined what many thought was a great season.
Instead, the Gamecocks, who have won tight wins over Tennessee, Ole Miss and Missouri, will win seven wins next week. A Saturday case could be considered a moral victory, but in a broader sense, players would accept it as a small sign of progress, even learning to work on a daily basis.
"It did not pay off," Brunson said. "We would like to be in a different place since the beginning of the year. But everyone has learned to manage what you have. Keep growing. Every week, continues to grow, continues to improve. Looking back when I arrived here, it's a complete culture change. We had guys who did not necessarily understand what it took to win.
"It happens. I do not know the outside. I do not really care honestly. But since I arrived here, my first year to now, the change of culture has been day and night. We have guys who want to win, who are hungry, who are willing to work. It takes time. It definitely takes time. But it's coming.
