The entire south side of the 101 Freeway in Hollywood was closed Sunday afternoon and into the night for more than five hours when detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department investigated a shootout between police officers and a man who had pulled out a handgun after getting out of his vehicle.
The southbound lanes of the highway reopened around 9:50 pm, the California Highway Patrol announced. A SigAlert was in place earlier closing these lanes for approximately 16:30.
Previously, traffic was blocked for hours on the highway and in the adjacent streets as police officers drove thousands of motorists out of the 101 and into neighboring neighborhoods.
A Los Angeles Police Command Center and several police units were visible on the highway. They stopped just behind the detectives looking inside, inside the purple interior of a black van.
The incident began when patrolmen began pursuing the nearby Range Rover. The man driving the SUV drove the police on the highway, Los Angeles police officials said on Twitter.
We understand that this shooting involving officers in Hollywood has caused a considerable delay in road traffic, but your safety is still our top priority. We had a perimeter, which included the 101 before, in which we were looking for an armed and dangerous suspect.

When the Range Rover arrived just south of Santa Monica Boulevard, the man came out of the vehicle and pulled out the handgun.
It was when an officer was shot and killed – Los Angeles police did not say who shot first or how many shots were fired.
The man ran off on the highway and headed for an apartment complex on Avenue Normandy.
A police dog was used to find the man – at 4:45 pm, agents placed him in custody, wound to death. He was not immediately identified by the police.
Officials did not specify whether the man had been hit by bullets during the shooting or whether the police dog had bitten him. No officer was injured.

Detectives in costume could be seen strolling down the ramp to Normandy Avenue. Police blocked several adjacent streets and police attempted to direct more and more vehicles on hold.
"We are conducting a thorough investigation," LAPD officials said on Twitter at 8:07 pm.
