ATLANTA – Georgian Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said the September unemployment rate in southwestern Georgia was the lowest ever recorded for the region.
The 16-county region has also increased the number of occupied residents and saw its unemployment claims fall in September. Meanwhile, the labor force declined and critical indicators were positive for the year.
"It's exciting to see so many communities in the state doing as well," said Butler. "We continue to create jobs and see the unemployment rate drop. Better yet, people are hired – often at record levels. "
The unemployment rate for September, at 3.8%, was down 0.6% from the previous month. A year ago, the rate was 5.2%. The September rate for the region was ninth among the 12 regions of the state.
Southwestern Georgia's labor force decreased by 92 in September to 149,842. This number decreased by 1,098 from last year, an average monthly loss of about 90.
South West Georgia gained 832 persons in September, bringing the total to 144,147. The number is up 1,033 for the year, about 85 per month.
Unemployment insurance claims fell by 20% in September. They decreased by 27% compared to the same month of the previous year.
Employees Georgia, GDOL's online job posting service at employgeorgia.com, posted 632 active job opportunities in the metropolitan area of southwestern Georgia for September. The southwestern region of Georgia includes the counties of Baker, Calhoun, Colquitt, Decatur, Dougherty, Early, Grady, Lee, Miller, Mitchell, Seminole, Terrell, Thomas and Worth.
At the national level, the US Secretary of Labor, Alexander Acosta, issued Friday the following statement about the report on the employment situation of October 2018: "The report on the jobs of October showed another month of strong growth in terms of job creation. With 250,000 new jobs added, we have created a total of 4.5 million jobs since November 2016. Jobs have been created across all sectors. Employment reached a record high of 156,562,000.

"In the past year, we have seen the largest increase in average hourly earnings since 2009," Acosta said in a press release. "It is encouraging to see that Americans are seeing more in their paychecks because job creators are competing for the best talent in the job market.
"The October Jobs Report added a more positive news to the growth of the economy. Gross domestic product for the third quarter was 3.5% and consumer confidence was the highest of the last 18 years. This week, the White House announced that more than 6 million Americans would receive labor market training as a result of the president's promise to American workers. The investment in the American workforce will continue to generate excellent returns for our country. "
The Secretary of Labor mentioned the recovery after the cyclone in his report.
"Parts of the United States continue to recover from hurricanes caused by hurricanes Florence and Michael," said Acosta. "The Ministry of Labor is working closely with affected states to help laid-off workers get back to work as quickly as possible."
