The United States will work with Russia to maintain cooperation in space programs and separate joint exploration efforts from land-based tensions between Washington and Moscow, said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstein on Monday.
"We have been able to ensure that this space is different from all the sometimes earthly challenges we face with our international partners, especially Russia," said Bridenstein. "So, I have the intention to keep this relationship strong."
Bridenstein explained that Dimitry Rogozin, director of the Russian space agency Roscosmos, had expressed a similar point of view during a recent telephone conversation.
A break in US-Russian space cooperation appeared over the weekend when Rogozin expressed reluctance to join the US-sponsored effort to establish a lunar space station in orbit.
Rogozin said on Saturday that Russia could create its own inhabited platform to orbit the moon.
