Gary 'Spike' O'Sullivan's hopes for a world title shot came to an end after just 164 seconds of his fight against David Lemieux in Las Vegas on Saturday night.
The fighter from Cork participated in the elimination of this WBA title knowing that a victory would have allowed him to take a shot at the belt.
But it was dropped near the end of the first, the French Canadian unleashed a bad left hook.
Mahon's man came down and the fight was stopped by referee Russell Mora, which means he's never had the chance to leave.
There was a fierce war of words between the boxers during construction, Lemieux saying he wanted to harm his opponent "for life".
Fortunately, this has never been the case, the fight ending with a single hammer at 14:44 of the first 29 years.
O'Sullivan had some decent shots, but as he was trying to follow a jab, Lemieux, known as one of the biggest hitters in the middleweight circuit, caught him.
He went down and Mora did not even bother to finish the countdown before calling the fight. He finally got up, but seemed unstable.
At 34, O'Sullivan must now decide whether he wants to resume construction after his third defeat in 31 professional fights.
