The Bears are a first-team team that merged with their freshman head coach. They are at the heart of a Los Angeles-style shift at the Rams: they have gone from a moribund franchise to the bottom of the case at their headquarters with an apparently boundless promise. The common denominator between the 2017 Rams and the 2018 Bears: a new head coach who not only successfully matched the quarterback of the franchise, but earned the respect and trust of his entire team.
But it's not clear that what happened between Nagy, Mitch Trubisky and the Bears was going to materialize. Think about where the other coaches interviewed by the bears are for their open work in January:
Vic Fangio: Stayed the Bears' defensive coordinator is the brain (or "evil genius", as Khalil Mack called it) of the best defense in the league.
George Edwards: Remained as the defensive coordinator of the Minnesota Vikings.
Pat Shurmur: At 3-7, the New York Giants head coach did not recruit a quarterback with the second overall pick and must find a successor to Eli Manning.
Josh McDaniels: Burned the Indianapolis Colts with his last minute turnaround to remain the offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots.
John DeFilippo: He left his Philadelphia Eagles quarterback coaching position to become the Viking offensive coordinator, where the Minnesota offense is average.
The first-year head coaches, in 2018, have a combined record of 29 to 43 years. At the start of the weekend, Nagy is the only one in the group, Shurmur (Giants), Frank Reich (Colts), Mike Vrabel (Titans), Matt Patricia (Lions), Steve Wilks (Cardinals) and Jon Gruden (Raiders). with a record of over .500.
It is too early to crown Nagy as the best coach hired in 2018, but given the track record of his team and the reaction of his team, it's hard to argue that he is not at the moment.
