COSTILLA COUNTY, Col. (CBS4) – More than 2,000 homes were evacuated in the counties of Costilla and Huerfano due to the spring fire.
On Sunday morning, the authorities stated that the fire had reached containment. It burns east of Fort Garland.
Authorities announced Saturday that they had arrested a man accused of firing the fire on purpose. Jesper Jorgenson is currently detained.
Fighting efforts were hindered Saturday because of a drone that caused all air operations to stop. Officials insist and plead with the public that they do not fly drones over the fire because the plane can crash with one of their own.
The Sheriff's Office and County Assessors began to identify lost structures and to whom they belong – but a exact number of structures burned or destroyed was not
Firefighters are waiting for hot, dry and unstable conditions in their fight on Sunday. They say the fire was active on the northwestern and southeastern sides of Mt. Mestas, and continued growth was scheduled for Sunday.
Highway 160 remains closed with no estimated time of reopening. Route 12 is also closed in the Cuchara Valley region due to mandatory evacuations.
The fire protection district of La Veta and the Red Cross do not currently accept donations in kind for the spring fire. Financial donations can be made to the La Veta Fire Protection District, PO Box 44, La Veta, CO 81055.
