SPRINGFIELD, PA. (WPVI) –

Police opened an investigation after reports of gunshots prompted the evacuation and closure of the Springfield Mall on Saturday afternoon.

The mall car park was full of cars and people, but shots were fired and shoppers were seen running.

Little girls in Halloween costumes, the parents, crossed the Springfield Mall in Delaware County with their hands up in the air.

Crowds of nervous shoppers ran screaming when the gunshots were heard.

Others were escorted by the Springfield Township police at one o'clock this afternoon.

Ciani Hamilton, a mall employee, said, "Once they started shooting, you could see everyone running."

A bullet went through the windshield of a car parked outside.

One witness said, "There were glass sockets and bullets all around my car."

The police said everything started as a fight between two groups of people inside, which intensified in the parking lot. Investigators believe that shots were fired on both sides.

Barbara Gaines, a witness, said, "We saw a group of guys arguing, and they started pushing, following and shaking, maybe about five minutes later, we saw a crowd of people grow the surrounding shops and said to leave the mall ".

Customers and store employees ordered to be housed while all the stores were empty.

"They told us to close the gate, close the doors and sit in a closed area where everything is secure," added Hamilton.

The Springfield Mall was closed for the rest of the day. Throughout the evening, security guards at the main entrance made customers flee.

The Springfield Township Police Service is investigating. One thing is certain, there are cameras everywhere in and outside this mall. The ministry is currently reviewing the images to identify the people involved and the cars used to escape.

No injuries were reported.

The mall will reopen Sunday at 11am.
