The fans of St. Vincent's 2017 album Masseduction are about to hear his songs in a new light, starting with a lite version of "Savior". Exchanging synths for piano, "Savior" now highlights the vocal range of Annie Clark while drawing in the darker and more plaintive currents of the original.

The song is a taste of Mass education, a new version of Masseduction which combines the resonant voice of Clark with Thomas Bartlett of Doveman on piano. Intimate and concentrated, the reworked songs were performed and recorded in two days at the Electric Lady Studio in Manhattan. A handwritten letter from Clark portrays this process: "Thomas and I faced each other – him, bending over a grand piano, me, rolled up on a couch."

Clark suggests that it is the impromptu collaboration with Bartlett that gives songs a new dimension. She describes the new album as "two very dear friends playing songs with the kind of secret understanding that we can only spend endless nights in New York".
