Yu Fen Wang, a 52-year-old employee of this establishment, was charged with five attempted murders, police said.
The victims – two girls and one boy, plus two adults – were in critical but stable condition in local hospitals, the police said.
Babies are between 3 days and 1 month old, the Queens Attorney's Office said in a statement.
A fourth infant, a three-week-old girl, suffered a skull fracture after being struck by the suspect, told CNN the official who had been informed of the case. A guard had taken the girl to the hospital before the police responded to a call about the assault.
Wang is being held in a hospital, where she undergoes a psychiatric evaluation and is being treated for her injuries, officials said. She will probably be charged next week.
She was unconscious when the police responded early Friday. She regained consciousness after the officers applied a tourniquet to stop bleeding from her wrist, the police said.
Investigators believe that foreign women would give birth in the facility before returning to their home country and applying for US citizenship, said the law enforcement official. The return allows them to stay in good standing with the country's authorities and, at the same time, to claim a direct relative in need of care in the United States.
"If they play it right, they come back for not having a negative status," said the manager. "Then they come back."
The residential facility in Flushing, Queens, was mainly used by Chinese women who gave birth and stayed behind before returning to China, a police source said Friday.
Neighbors said it was attended mainly by Chinese parents, but Korean and African families were also present.
Nine babies, as well as some of their parents, had gone to the residence during the attack, said Deputy Chief of the New York Police, Juanita Holmes.
Of the children present, five were girls and four were boys, she added.
According to the prosecutor's office, there were 11 crèches in the three-story building.
The suspect also assaulted the 31-year-old father with an injured child and a 63-year-old woman working in the facility, officials said.
The man was stabbed in the leg and the woman was stabbed to the torso, said Holmes.
Two knives were recovered, the police said.
The mobile in the Friday attack at 3:45 was not clear, said police spokesman, Lieutenant Thomas Antonetti.
The red-brick and multi-family house located on a tree-lined street appeared to be used as a daycare, although state officials stated that it was not allowed.
"We saw documents stating that it was a daycare," said Holmes, adding that the documents "indicated that they were a day care center".
Part of the building was used as "living quarters", she said.
Monica Mahaffey, spokeswoman for the agency, said in a statement that the site was not the location of a licensed or regulated child care program with the Child and Family Services Office of the agency. New York State.
"The OCFS is saddened by this horrific situation and the investigation of a possible illegal operation," she said.
State-regulated childcare programs are not allowed to take care of infants under 6 weeks old unless they are approved by the agency, says the communicated.

The city's building department has received several complaints about the property, including the possibility that it may be illegally used as a hotel, according to the archives. But the inspectors of the department could not access the house several times.
The city had received a complaint in 2011 about "screaming children" at the residence, Holmes said, noting that the call had reached a city hotline.
