SOUTH BEND, Indiana – Stanford has always started slowly this season. Saturday, for the first time, its end was even worse.
Notre Dame, number 8, dominated the cardinal seventh on both sides of the ball, winning a 38-17 victory at Notre Dame Stadium.
Stanford (4-1) not only lost his first game, he may have lost his star. Bryce Love limped up to the locker room in the fourth quarter and did not return after defensive lineman Julian Love rolled over his left ankle while attacking him.
The Stanford offense was three or nine times in 13 races and only 229 total yards, while Notre Dame (5-0) totaled 550. four TDs.
Love finished with 73 yards in 17 runs, including a 39-yard touchdown in the first quarter. He missed the team's third game, against UC Davis, with an undisclosed injury.
Stanford was lagging after the first quarter for the fourth time this season, but JJ Arcega-Whiteside, who took part in the second weekend in the FBS with seven touchdowns, grabbed a ball early in the second quarter to equalize to 14-14.
Stanford had only seven points early in the fourth quarter when, in three consecutive scrum matches, Notre Dame scored a touchdown, the cardinal launched an interception and Notre Dame scored a touchdown to seal the result.
After consecutive road games against the Fighting Irish and the 19 Oregon, Stanford returns home to face Utah on Saturday.
