Police in Blackpool, England, appealed for help regarding the alleged theft of a coat, cell phone and wallet at a restaurant in Blackpool, England. September 20, and social media users quickly pointed to the strange likeness of the suspect with the beloved sitcom character played by American actor David Schwimmer.

A Facebook publication from the Blackpool police showing a picture of the suspect wearing what appears to be a crate of beer received nearly 100,000 comments and was shared more than 50,000 times.

"Do you recognize this man? We want to tell him about a robbery in a restaurant in Blackpool," police said in the initial appeal.

The message, which became viral soon after, shows a CCTV image showing the suspect carrying a crate of what appears to be beer, and rumors that Ross Geller might be involved turned quickly to comedy .

"I do not think it's this guy's day, his week, his month or even his year," commented Nick Croston.

"Leave it," posted Louise Lewis. "He grew up with Monica. IF YOU HAVE NOT EATEN RAPIDLY YOU HAVE NOT EATEN. "

And there were a number of references to the famous episode of the second season "The One with Russ" in which Schwimmer himself plays the Ross look-alike.

"This is clearly not Ross," Sarah Willow wrote, "They are as different as the night and … later at night."

The references to the actor "Friends" were so numerous that the police felt compelled to react, claiming that David Schwimmer had been officially dismissed as a suspect.

Schwimmer was a regular regular in the "Friends" series for ten years, from 1994 to 2004. His performance as a frenzied paleontologist, Ross, earned him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for best actor in a comedy series in 1995.

And it may be that the viral post may still benefit the future career of the suspect, provided that he cooperates with the police authorities.

"Once he's gone, there could be a lucrative job for him," Andy Harman told ABC News, of the art agency lookalikes.co.uk.
