OAKLAND – Baker Mayfield has thrown two touchdown passes, but errors have sentenced the Cleveland Browns to further agony and a 45-42 overtime loss to the Oakland Raiders.
The Browns led 28-14 in the third quarter and 42-34 with just over a minute. It was a game that the Browns thought they had to win.
"Absolutely," said Mayfield. "But when you make a lot of mistakes, it will not happen."
Mayfield had four turnovers in his first NFL start: two interceptions and two lost streaks.
An interception, however, came in a bad pass by receiver Antonio Callaway, the other when Mayfield launched a pass deep in the final seconds, desperately trying to avoid overtime.
He fumbled once when he was sacked and a second time, when JC Tretter and he confused the cliche.
Mayfield had perfect passing passes to Darren Fells for 49 yards and a two-yard parade to Jarvis Landry. He set up another in the fourth quarter with a 59-yard offense to Antonio Callaway.
But he lamented his mistakes.
"I'm a quarter of the team," he said. "It's on me."
The Browns lost despite their best score since the second week of the 2007 season – a game that Derek Anderson was named starter and scored 51 points.
This defeat also came after it appeared that the Browns had won the race by fighting for a first try with 1:41 to go. But officials looked at the call and determined that Carlos Hyde was short, which forced a punt that led to Carr's equal attempt.
"It must have been a hell of a test to reverse the situation for the third time," said Mayfield. "But every time you put it in the hands of someone else, it will not always turn as before."
On her first start, Mayfield was 21-for-41 for 295 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He missed his third touchdown touch by 1 yard as Callaway had just come off the court at the end of the match. That would have made Mayfield the first quarterback chosen to make three touchdown passes on his first NFL start.
