TThe State Department is not ready to blame Russia or any other entity for a series of mysterious attacks against Cuban-based American diplomats, a senior US diplomat said Tuesday.
"There is no known cause; no known person or group seems to be responsible at the moment, "State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert told reporters. "We are looking at that."
More than two dozen American officials in Havana have been hit by a series of mysterious incidents, which began in late 2016, causing a series of cognitive problems. The incident caused a disintegration of US-Cuban relations. A diplomat based in China suffered from something similar. The Nauert update on Tuesday downplayed a report that US intelligence officials view Russia as the main suspect.
"The investigation is ongoing," she said. "We have not attributed any blame and we continue to examine that."
US lawmakers have suspected that Cuba plays a role, directly or indirectly, in the attacks on civil servants.
"They are the owners of the island," said Senate Speaker for External Relations Bob Corker at R-Tenn. Washington Examiner last year. "They know what's going on there."
The revelation that the incident was being repeated in China has created an additional alarm and broader theories about what might be going on. CIA investigators may have found evidence to tip the scales towards Moscow.
"The suspicions that Russia was behind the alleged attacks are supported by evidence of interception of communications," according to NBC. "If Russia used a futuristic weapon to damage the brains of American personnel, it would mean a dramatic escalation of Russian aggression against Western countries, recently compounded by the use of a nerve agent to poison an ex-spy and his daughter. in Great Britain."
Nauert threw cold water on this report, however. "I caution you all about the statements of these officials right now," she said.
