COLUMBUS, Ohio (PA) – Ohio is now accepting cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, for the payment of business tax, including sales tax.

The state treasury office, Josh Mandel, announced Monday that companies can register for the program via OhioCrypto.com.

Companies will pay their taxes through a third party processor called BitPay, which will convert digital currency into dollars that will be credited to state accounts.

A 1% fee will be applied to each transaction.

Mandel says that Ohio is the first state in the country to accept tax payments via a cryptocurrency. He says this new option will help Ohio become a leader in the adoption of blockchain technology.

OhioCrypto.com will accept bitcoin for 23 different business taxes.

It is unclear how many companies will pay with Bitcoin, but Mandel said he had received positive feedback from some private companies.
