Note to the wise: do not come on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" if you are a journalist who has not done your homework.
The presenter of "Fox News Sunday," Chris Wallace, was the show's guest on Thursday night, the day after his acceptance of the Freedom of Expression Award from the Media Institute, and Colbert dipped directly into the grill. Colbert directly asked Wallace why a journalist like him would not want to challenge the lies of President Donald Trump. Trump, earlier in the day, had delivered a speech on immigration – who was packed with lies – to encourage his fans to vote mid-term. Wallace tried to defend the speech by saying that opening the borders was detrimental to the security of the United States.
"The fear of the caravan is not good, but the idea that three, five or seven thousand people from another country can go to our border, knock on the door and say, 'We want to enter! We want jobs here, we want to work here, "said Wallace. "A country does indeed need borders and there must be some system that determines whether or not people are allowed in the country. Seriously, do you believe in open borders?
Colbert did not buy that: "No, we do not have an open border. There is one system and three to five thousand people will not be able to do it. This has happened many times before, and they never do it, and you know it!
But then, a real conflict erupted when Wallace began to state "facts" about the process of obtaining asylum.
"They are sent to the country, we do not have enough places to install them, so we have a takeover and release program," Wallace said, "and about 10 percent of those arrested and released return for their hearings. And only about 10% obtain a legitimate asylum. "
Colbert used a researcher to verify Wallace's claims.
"These are not the facts I've seen, we have a long interview, and in the end we'll know if you're right, okay?" If a majority appeared at the hearing, how wrong would you be?
Wallace started to back off quickly. "I would be wrong about 40%," Wallace said.
At the end of their interview, the researcher printed a fact check of PolitiFact and revealed that 60 to 70% of the non-detained immigrants had attended court proceedings, according to the Ministry of Justice.
Wallace accepted his mistake, but not before tearing the fact sheet by joking.
