The television host late at night, Stephen Colbert, speaks openly about his faith, but revealed in an interview [his] atheism "before returning to Catholicism.
The CBS star told Father James Martin on Thursday evening, during his Catholic television show "Faith in Focus", that he had already turned away from God at some point in his life. However, a moment in 1986, when he was 22, changed his mind while walking down the street in Chicago.
"I had lost my faith in God, because of my great sorrow," he explained. "I was somehow convinced to have been wrong all this time to have learned something that was not true."
That day, while walking, a person handed a book to the comedian.
"And I was walking down the street and somebody laid out a little New Testament proverbs and green psalms," he said.
The host of "The Late Show" said that he had to open the Bible to read it because it was very cold outside.
"And I open it to a little glossary in the front and he says worms to read on the base if you [have] anxiety, he says.
He recalled the passage of Matthew chapter 5. The comedian stated that he immediately felt "lightened" after reading the passage.
"For the first time, I understood the true meaning of this sentence, she spoke to me. I like to read the page. The words of Christ read the page. There was no effort. I stood at the corner of the street in the cold and read this sermon. And my life has never been the same, "said Colbert.
"It's beautiful," replied the priest.
"This gift of religion is something that can only be done in this way," he said.
"And therefore, you should be humble and accept this act of love. And see what they gave you without rejecting it, "he says.
