It's not Michael Scott, but we'll take it.
Steve Carell is back on television in the upcoming Apple series starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon on the behind-the-scenes action of competing morning shows, according to Variety.
The star of "Beautiful Boy", who plays almost exclusively in films since the release of "The Office" in 2011, was chosen to embody the main male role, Mitch Kessler, a presenter "who has trouble keeping its relevance in a changing media landscape ".
Apple won the rights to the series – the technology society's first foray into drama television on a platform not yet launched – at the end of last year and has commissioned two seasons of 10 episodes.
The co-creator of "Bates Motel," Kerry Ehrin, was named last April as a showrunner as part of an exclusive multi-year deal with Apple, replacing the producer and consultant of "House of Cards," Jay Carson, because of creative differences.
The series, which will be produced by Aniston and Witherspoon, is based on a concept of producer Michael Ellenberg and is inspired by Brian Stelter's book Top of the Morning: In the ruthless world of Morning TV.
Carell won the Golden Globe Award in the "Actor" category after the first season of the beloved NBC television series in the mid-2000s.
As to whether Carell would take over the role that made him a well-known name, the actor recently described as "virtually impossible" the recovery long evoked by the series.
"Apart from the fact that I do not think it's a good idea, it may be impossible to make this show today and have it accepted as it was accepted 10 years ago", he told Esquire.
"The climate is different," he said. "The whole idea of this character, Michael Scott, was largely based on inappropriate behavior. … Much of what is described in this show is completely wrong. That's the goal, you know? But I just do not know how it would fly now. "
