Shares ended sharply lower on Tuesday after the torrid trading session pushed the S & P 500 and the Dow into the red for the year. The S & P 500

SPX, -1.82%

was down 1.8% to end around 2642, according to preliminary figures. The Dow Jones Industrial Average

DJIA, -2.21%

lost 552 points, or 2.2%, to finish around 24,463. The Nasdaq composite

DJIA, -2.21%

slipped 1.7% to 6,909. The S & P is down 1.2% since the beginning of the year, while the Dow Jones index was down over the same period. All components of the Dow Jones Index and the 11 sectors of the S & P 500 Index ended lower. Concerns over the slowdown in global trade tensions between the US and China and rising interest rates all weighed on equity market dynamics.
