Stolen milk results in the death of a suspect during a shootout with police, according to authorities

An Arizona police officer was shot dead by a police officer in front of a Walmart Monday evening, after an employee reported that the man had stolen a bottle of milk, officials said.

The Walmart employee in Peoria called the police against a man at around 6 pm, Phoenix FOX 10 reported. Peoria is about a 25-minute drive north of Phoenix.

The man was later identified as Michael John Stout, 20, of Peoria. The police said they had seen a man matching the description of Stout's employee standing in front of the store's garden center, the Republic of Arizona reported.

After parking the vehicle, an officer came out. Police said Stout fired in their direction, hitting several bullets in their vehicle. The officer in the vehicle came out and fired back, while the other policeman fired from inside the vehicle, police said.

The officer's towers hit Stout and he fell, the Republic reported. The agents provided medical assistance to Stout. Police said Stout was transferred to a hospital where he was pronounced dead the next morning, FOX reported.

The investigators discovered that Stout was using a handgun that was stolen from a vehicle on Monday morning. Video cameras worn by police officers were not immediately available.

No one else was hurt during the shooting.
