Everyone was encouraged to shop in small businesses on Saturday as the holiday season began.

Saturday's small business was first observed in 2010 and has since increased. According to the National Retail Federation, 67 million people are expected to shop Saturday and 78% of them said they would do it specifically to support small businesses.

The main street in Ellicott City is a great place to shop for Saturday's small businesses. The region is still recovering from the devastating flood of May and business owners who have reopened their stores and restaurants are hoping their customers will consider shopping with them.

Tammy Beiderman, owner of Sweet Elizabeth Jane, said Saturday's small business was usually the busiest day of the shop.

"We were expecting a good crowd today, we tried to make the point, we have a bar of hot chocolate, and in the last seven years or so it has reached its current level," said Beiderman. .

According to American Express, two-thirds of every dollar spent on a small business stays in the community.
