A high school love triangle apparently stabbed a Michigan schoolroom on Wednesday, leaving a 16-year-old student dead and a 17-year-old classmate in custody on charges of murder, the police said.
The two girls had already been friends, but they apparently quarreled with the same boy, the police said.
Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer said in an interview with Warren police that the violent confrontation occurred at approximately 8:30 am at Fitzgerald High School in Warren, Detroit suburb. press conference.
The victim was taken to Warren's St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital where she died at 9:24 am, police said.
The names of the victim and the suspect were not disclosed.
"It is possible that the victim and the suspect had a relationship with the student," Dwyer said.
The incident occurred shortly after classes began on Wednesday, Dwyer said. He said 20 to 30 other students and their teacher were in the classroom when the 17-year-old took out a steak knife and attacked the victim.
There are no metal detectors in the school, said Dwyer.
A school resource officer was immediately summoned to the classroom and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the victim until the ambulance arrived, Dwyer said.
The suspect remained at the scene and was detained without incident, said Dwyer. The knife, which police believe the victim brought home, was recovered, he said.
"I can only say that the victim and the suspect knew each other and that the student knew both the suspect and the victim and that this could be one of the reasons this happened." "said Dwyer.
He stated that the student, aged 16 or 17, had been questioned by the police and cooperated with the investigation.
"It's really a tragedy," said Dwyer. "Our prayers are going to the family of the victim."
No other students were injured in this deadly altercation.
"All parties involved are heterosexual students and none have been involved in any problems at all," said Dwyer.
He said the suspect was taken to the Warren Police Department for questioning.
"She made a confession," said Dwyer, who declined to elaborate. "We will ask for a murder warrant."
He said it would be up to the Macomb County District Attorney to decide whether to charge the suspect with murder.
Dwyer said the investigators were also examining the text messages exchanged between the victim and his alleged killer, but he did not disclose the content of the messages.
Dwyer described the victim as an extroverted student, member of the cross-country team, the robotics club, the color guard, the fanfare, the National Honors Society, the student council, and the An organization called A Generation of Promise.
Psychological counseling was provided to students, especially those who witnessed stabbing, said Laurie Fournier, Fitzgerald Public School Principal. She said all classes at the school had been canceled for the rest of Wednesday and that the school would be closed Thursday.
"Our hearts and prayers are going to the student family and we offer our deepest condolences," Fournier said in a statement posted on the school district's website. "We are working closely with the police on this issue and are conducting an internal review of the incident school, which will review all of our current security protocols and procedures."
